Don’t forget when choosing that perfect wedding style, that your hair is just as important as your dress. With so many styling options, the choices can be overwhelming. We enlisted three stylists from local salons to create both an updo and a down ’do to accentuate three different hair types.

Carly Childers of Blackbird Salon
344-7072 or blackbirdsalon.com
Childers is the manager of Blackbird Salon in Church Hill which opened in January. It is the second location of the salon (a third location just opened in May at 1008 Lafayette St.). She worked at the original location in The Fan for three-and-a-half years before she moved to Michigan, but returned to Richmond to open the Church Hill
salon. For the down ’do (opposite page) she created, Childers enhanced the hair’s natural texture, accentuating the wave by giving it a shine. For the updo (above), she used a Dutch braid, which creates interest when placed to the side. “It’s very popular with brides and it makes the look very formal and elegant and soft,” she says.
Tip: “Adding a veil or [headpiece] can really make the style work for a formal wedding.”

Natty Jackson of Bombshell
342-0051 or ilovebombshell.com
Jackson has worked at Bombshell for about four years as a hair stylist. She is also a member of the new Bombshell Bridal team, which she helped to create. She specializes in vintage styles, but has experience with modern looks and everything in between. For the styles she created here, Jackson used a modern classic look. Using a fringe bang (opposite page) is a shout-out to the ’50s and adding a flower adds a little bit of drama to the look. “I didn’t use a flat iron,” she says. “I just embraced that texture.” For this side-twisted style (above), Jackson finger-rolled the model's hair and secured the twists with bobby pins.
Tip: “I would suggest if you are doing a natural style, an indoor wedding is always best, to account for humidity and temperature.”

Niki Martell of Shine
918-4804 or shineblowdry.com
Martell has worked for Shine as a stylist,
specializing in wedding hair, since September 2015. After styling locally, she moved to Las Vegas, doing hair at the Bellagio Hotel for eight years. She says Shine is a good fit for her now, because it’s the only blow-dry bar in Richmond — meaning they do styling, but no cuts or color.
For the down ’do (opposite page), she used a
curling iron to enhance the curl and created
a braid, adding natural greenery to accentuate the feature. For the updo (above), she wound the natural hair and then pinned it all around. “I just wanted her [hairstyle] to enhance her gorgeous face and neckline,” she says.
Tip: “Don’t be afraid to use a lot of hairspray to set the style. Then spray a shine spray in a cloud around the hair. It lays real nicely and takes that crusty harsh look away."
