Holy longevity, Batman, Richmond, VA ComiCon is turning 40!
Started in 1986 by Guy Rose, this comic book-focused festival of fandom is one of the longest-running in the state. It grew from a small gathering into a twice-a-year destination for collectors and cosplayers; additional shows are hosted in Chesterfield and Fairfax.
Today, Brett Carreras runs the convention. When it turned 38, he wrote on social media, “Our ‘little show that could’ has grown steadily into being one of the most anticipated and respected one-day fandom events in the country, all with zero corporate influence.”
On Sept. 12, the show returns to Richmond Raceway, offering art, pop culture collectibles and, of course, plenty of comic books. The popular cosplay contest awards prizes in multiple categories for the best costumes.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 (available online only).
