In the late 1960s, the Silver Apples — audio manipulator Simeon (Coxe) and drummer Danny Taylor — recorded two wild, unclassifiable albums that fused electronic circuit noise and percussion, tossing Edwardian poetry, a banjo and Musique concrète into the din.
The short-lived group’s influence can be heard in everything from German Krautrock to Stereolab. The duo toured again in the ’90s, but since his bandmate’s 2005 death, Simeon warps it one-man-band style with samples of Taylor’s hard-hitting drums.
After all these years, Simeon’s Silver Apples still sound like mutant music of the highest order. The only question is how the space rock pioneer will cram all those oscillators into tiny Gallery5. Liftoff is May 20. 8 p.m. $15. 200 W. Marshall St. 510-0488 or gallery5arts.org.
