A portrait of Richmond clothing retailer Meyer Greentree by David Silvette
Pieces from Virginia’s most prolific lineage of portrait painters will be on display during The Valentine museum’s “Life on Canvas: Portraits From the Silvette Family” exhibition opening Sept. 24 and continuing through Sept. 6, 2027.
Based in the Richmond region, David Silvette and his sisters, Marcia and Mildred, followed in their father’s footsteps, painting portraits of various historical figures, officials and friends throughout the 20th century. David was confident in his artistic eye, often refusing to alter his work regardless of his high-profile clientele’s approval — including the Virginia Art Commission, which became involved in a dispute turned First Amendment lawsuit that eventually reached federal court. The showcase offers a glimpse into the Silvette family’s lives and works and the stories behind them.
The exhibition is included with museum admission ($10 to $12, free on Thursdays).
