Many Richmonders will use Labor Day on Sept. 7 for some much-needed rest and relaxation. Whether you want to slow down, amp up or soak it all in, here are some suggestions for taking a break from the daily grind.
Sept. 4
J. Tucker & The Krewe kick off the extended weekend with R&B hits from the ’90s and 2000s at Uptown Alley in Midlothian. Add food and bowling (for an additional fee) to enhance the entertainment experience. The music begins at 9 p.m. Tickets start at $14.
Through Sept. 7
Move fast if you want to catch the final days of the Science Museum of Virginia’s touring exhibition, “Survival of the Slowest,” which demonstrates how the perceived shortcomings of animals can actually be beneficial. Learn how certain species use their unhurried traits not only to survive but to thrive. Plus, observe live animals, including a bearded dragon, a hedgehog, a ball python and a sloth. The museum hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 4). Tickets are $5 after admission to the SMV ($11 to $19).
Through Sept. 7
Labor Day marks the last day to enjoy wet and wild fun at Kings Dominion’s Soak City before the water park seasonal closure. It’s also a special opportunity to visit the theme park on a Monday as it transitions to a post-summer weekend schedule. Kings Dominion is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Soak City’s hours are noon to 7 p.m. Single-day admission starts at $45.
Sept. 7
Gallery5 offers your ticket to a “Labor Day vibefest,” where indie rockers Crystal Flowers, alternative trio Slow Teeth and singer-songwriter Missangelbird take the stage. The concert is from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $15.
