As leader of the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, singer and multi-instrumentalist Rhiannon Giddens successfully rejiggered traditional blues and old-time folk music for the Starbucks generation.
With that band now in limbo (Giddens remains the only original member), she reinvents herself as a contemporary song interpreter on two recent solo releases, “Tomorrow Is My Turn” and “Factory Girl.” Aided and abetted by ace producer T Bone Burnett and an eclectic all-star band of seasoned players hailing from Nashville to Motown, she unveils an earthy sound that coaxes new meaning from songs made famous by Dolly, Patsy, Nina and Odetta.
Giddens brings her shape-shifting neo-folk to The National on April 13 at 7:30 p.m. $23 to $28. 612-1900 or thenationalrva.comt.
