A common misconception is that metal is meted out in short bursts of aggression, filigreed with indulgent solos.
Monolord, a Swedish troupe indebted to a dirge-y derivation of the genre, works mostly with eight-minute structures, giving each composition a chance to mount a peak and trudge down the other side. Lyrics might tell of a father duping his son or warn of environmental disaster. But it’s the slow-cooked progressions that made the trio suitable tour-mates for Richmond’s Windhand in 2015.
