The vigorous appreciation of soul music and ’60s rock maneuvering that propelled Dan Auerbach in the Black Keys has been expanded in his role as frontman for The Arcs.
The Ohio-bred guitarist pulls in a kaleidoscope of influences for his new ensemble, which features a pair of drummers, but doesn’t ape the Dead’s aimless rambling. Instead, the bandleader injects references to Jamaican rhythms and more genteel takes on the Woodstock generation’s music.
That Auerbach’s been able to keep his knotty guitar solos intact amid such a unique setting at least hints at his melodic ingenuity. Having previously played Richmond at the Coliseum in late 2014, Auerbach stops at The National with The Arcs on July 19. 8 p.m. $33 ($28 in advance). 612-1900 or thenationalva.com.
