Baltimore’s Animal Collective is one of those rare contemporary rock bands that make inspired psychedelic music less rooted in the golden haze of ’60s worship than the poke-and-swipe ambiance of our modern age. Of course the influences are obvious — the repetitive harmonies of “Smile”-era Beach Boys, the metronomic pulse of Phillip Glass, Pink Floyd’s stirring soundscapes — but the results are as uniquely otherworldly as they are bombastic. And the quartet is a true “collective,” with band members coming in and out of the picture as solo projects and whims dictate.
Animal Collective brings the vivid neo-psych to the National, 708 E. Broad St., at 7 p.m. Nov. 4. $24.50 to $28. All ages.
