In the introduction to his 1985 play A Lie of the Mind, author Sam Shepard asks that directors be sure to include “live music … with an American backbone.” It’s a request that Anna Senechal Johnson plans to see through. “We’re very excited to be collaborating with Drew Perkins,” Johnson says. “He’s composed an original score that his band will play live onstage.” Set in the American West, the play deals with themes of family dynamics in the wake of a violent act. Johnson describes it as both “painful and funny … it really examines both sides of family.” A Lie of the Mind runs through 23 in the Theatre Gym at Virginia Rep Center. $28. 282-2620 or va-rep.org.
