The predominantly male cast of “1776,” running through Oct. 23 at Virginia Repertory Theatre, is directed by Debra Clinton with musical director Sandy Dacus providing “a necessary balance,” Clinton says.
The show addresses the fundamental questions of the American experiment, issues we’re still arguing over, especially around election time. Among the performers playing our “flawed, contradictory” forefathers: the protean Scott Wichmann as John Adams, and the always affable Jason Marks as Benjamin Franklin. Repping the ladies are Abigail Adams (Sarah Kate Walston), her husband’s conscience and confidante, and the “artfully disarming” Martha Jefferson (Christie Jackson).
