Want to stroll around historic Shockoe Slip, sample restaurant cuisine and support a worthy cause at the same time? The fourth annual Gilbane Restaurant Walk, set for Friday, Aug. 28, from 5 to 9 p.m., is a fundraiser to benefit Hospital Hospitality House of Richmond. For $30, each participant will receive a T-shirt and a pint glass, and they'll be able to taste food donated by Europa, Lucky Buddha, Stool Pigeons Coop and Grill, and The Tobacco Company. Restaurant walkers will spend an hour at each eatery, trying five to nine dishes.
"I think it's a good cause and a good group of people, so it's kind of a win-win for us," said Michelle Williams, a partner in Richmond Restaurant Group, which includes Europa.
Hospital Hospitality House is a private nonprofit that provides lodging for patients undergoing medical treatment and for their families. The cost of providing lodging for a guest is about $40 per night, but the suggested donation is $10 a day. However, guests are not turned away if they lack funds to make a donation, Hospitality House director Ellen Sandridge says. The local Hospitality House is the largest in the country that operates on a donations-only basis.
About 400 people participated in last year's restaurant walk, which raised $23,000. To sign up for the event, visit hhhrichmond.org and complete the registration form.
