Brunch

The only meal I've enjoyed at Helen's is brunch. But if the rest of the meals are comparable, I'm going to become a steady diner there. The best part of my brunch is the pancakes. I order whatever fruit is in season for a topping, along with an Irish banger (sausage). I've never tasted pancakes as good as these -- including my own. What's most distinctive about them is how crisp they are, especially around the edges. And Helen's is one of the few restaurants I've ordered pancakes at, outside of New England, that actually come with pure maple syrup. That, and the crispness, makes all of the difference in the world to someone who LOVES pancakes!! The wait staff is made up of funky, college-age kids, all of whom seem to wear prominent tattoos and most of whom are women. With that said, there service is nonpareil. The owner is a real character who clearly loves meeting each of his customers. He's a very down to earth guy, originally from Ireland that, if I drank beer, would eagerly look forward to sitting down with him and downing a pint. The one negative I can say about Helen's is its popularity: if you don't get there early enough for brunch expect a long line. The reward is that it's food and service well worth waiting for.
