This recipe from the Primland resort in Southwest Virginia lives up to its name.
12 strips of applewood smoked bacon (thick cut)
1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup
2 to 3 teaspoons of sugar-in-the-raw (or turbinado sugar)
Cayenne pepper, to taste
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lay the bacon strips on a sheet pan so that they're not touching. Brush the bacon with the maple syrup and coat liberally with the sugar-in-the-raw. Sprinkle with cayenne pepper, to taste. Bake until the sugar caramelizes. Remove from the oven and pan, and serve.
