Combining a kitchen, breakfast area and family room in a way that complements the adjoining living room was the task assigned to Melissa Utt of Custom Kitchens by her detailed-oriented clients. “We replaced the oversized desk separating the kitchen and family room with a smaller island and integrated columns to unite the two spaces,” Utt explains. “We also centered the island with the [family room] fireplace by jacking up the second floor and then relocating the load-bearing columns to seamlessly penetrate the newly centered island.”
Traditional cabinetry and English plumbing fixtures were designed to mesh with the sleek commercial-style appliances. The new, more functional kitchen island increases work and storage space and provides informal seating that eliminates the need for a breakfast table, improving traffic flow through the room. A dark, walled-off butler’s pantry was transformed into a light, airy space with glass cabinetry. New organizational spaces include a lateral filing system, spice drawer organizer, cutlery divider, bread drawer and utensil organizer. Subway tile, pendant lights and ornamental hardware complete the kitchen makeover in this Henri Road home.
