Keeping It Light
Sarah Strong and Alan Wayne live in New York City, but the Richmond natives knew they wanted to come home for their wedding. “We love Richmond,” Sarah says. “It still feels like home.” And besides, the couple has a lot of history in this city. They met in 2001 at Monacan High School. A good friendship blossomed into a college romance, and the two have been together ever since — even through a stint working in different cities.
To get back to their roots, the couple wed at The Mill at Fine Creek. Sarah was especially drawn to the trees. “You really feel like you can breathe [there],” she says. Unfortunately, rain kept everyone inside for most of the big day, but that didn’t dampen the bride’s mood. “You end up putting all of that aside,” Sarah says.
The couple used Alan’s parents’ ceremony as a template for their own. They also wrote their own vows. After Sarah and Alan were announced as husband and wife, a cocktail hour kicked off with his (pomegranate champagne) and hers (maple bourbon) cocktails, as well as a special request from Alan: Brunswick stew. During the buffet dinner, Sarah, a registered dietitian and wellness coach, chose healthy options for the guests, including quinoa, locally ground grits and roasted vegetables.
Sarah says the look of the night was minimalist with natural, neutral touches. Bundles of vegetables tied with twine were placed on some of the tables. Decorative lace, which the bride and her bridesmaids scored from old dresses at thrift shops, added to the rustic feel.
The reception also featured a lot of dancing. “I can’t dance well, but I love to dance,” Sarah says, while adding that the best part of the night was seeing everyone together. “We had these people who love us so much stand up and talk about our relationship,” Sarah says. “That meant a lot to us.”
