It seems like a simple enough recipe: Take six of Richmond’s most talented musicians (including The Head and the Heart’s Tyler Williams), mix well and simmer. That’s how Avers cooked up its blend of old-fashioned garage rock, finished with spacey, 21st-century psychedelic pop. The band takes a democratic approach to music-making, swapping instruments and vocal duties and collaborating to create its critically acclaimed sound. Buoyed by buzz from performances at South by Southwest (SXSW) in March and armed with fresh songs from its second album (recorded at Richmond’s own Montrose Studios), Avers returns to Strange Matter on June 14 with Strand of Oaks. 9 p.m. $10. 447-4763 or strangematterrva.com.
