Richmond Magazine’s May
Issue
“50 Fabulous Food Finds,”
“Grocery Wars” and More
This month’s issue hits
heavy on the topic of food — including a list of culinary
gems around town, a look at Richmond’s fast-changing
grocery-store scene and even a news story on the city’s
meals-tax mess: Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll
find inside:
- We dispatched a team
of writers to scout the region for “50
Fabulous Food Finds,” and, trust us, the difficult
part wasn’t finding delectable dishes — it was
narrowing down the list. From a sweet Dutch pastry to a spicy Ethiopian
appetizer, we uncover some goods worth trying.
- In the next couple of years, Richmond-region grocery
shoppers will notice a spate of changes at local food retailers
— from a second Fresh Market on South Side to the opening of
two major retailers — Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods
Market. In “Grocery
Wars,” we look at the changing landscape for
grocery chains in the region.
- We get a
local perspective from Pat Kite, the mother of a Marine,
whose son’s military deployment the Iraq war zone has made
for some sleepless nights and bittersweet holidays.
Join Us at Broad
Appétit Where
Food and Art Intersect

The first annual Broad
Appétit Food Festival will feature Richmond’s
favorite food purveyors, restaurants, chefs and artisans. The event
— May 18 on the 100, 200, and 300 blocks of W. Broad from
12-5p.m. — is free to the public and is designed to feed your
mind, body and soul with an eclectic mix of crafts and art, more food
than you can imagine and a huge kid’s area with puppet shows
and storytelling. A performing-arts stage will host musical acts and
performance artists, and demonstrations will be on hand from
fascinating folks like our nation’s leading Bug Chefs and
food-revolution leader Joel Salatin. Visit www.broadappetit.com
for details.
R Health &
Beauty In
Richmond magazine and at select
locations
This month, you’ll find our expanded
R Health & Beauty magazine. Features
include:
- In 10 years, the
number of bariatric patients has spiked from 12,000 to 110,000. We take
a closer look at the implications of weight-loss surgeries, including a
mother and her son who had very different
results.
- How to take a good picture: Very few
of us like how we look in photos, but four brave souls model their
worst poses and take some tips about how to charm the
lens.
- Our “Spas 101”
guide offers some tips to spa etiquette that will keep you in good
graces wherever you go to recharge.
